A Taste of the Old West

One of the most romanticized historical periods was the Old West, and The Dalles, OR was right in the center of all the new exploration and settlements happening at the time. In 1876, John and James Baldwin opened the Baldwin Saloon and it has been a Columbia Gorge favorite ever since!

Street view of Baldwin Saloon

Although much has changed over the last 135 years, the Baldwin Saloon has remained a prominent fixture in The Dalles community. Through those years the Baldwin Saloon did not always remain a restaurant. Changing ownership a number of times the building was not only a saloon but a brothel, steamboat navigational office, warehouse, coffin storage site for neighboring mortuary (now the Clock Tower Ale Pub), and state employment office and a saddle shop. Finally in the early 1990’s the building was sold to the current owners who sought to restore the building back to its original glory. Restoring the sight while updating it with modern amenities and building codes was quite a task, but the end result was flawless. Pieces from the original Baldwin Saloon can be found around the restaurant; however the new Saloon has a more simplistic, modern look to it. The current owners have eloquently combined past and present aesthetics to create a warm and welcoming ambiance for their patrons.

Baldwin Saloon when it was a storage facility

Guests of Celilo Inn should definitely stop by the Baldwin Saloon, not just for the great ambiance and a glimpse of the past, but for the delicious food as well. The restaurant is not just a historical spot but has amazing food! There is something for everyone, but seafood lovers will be especially impressed by the menu. One of the most popular dishes the Baldwin offers is the Seafood Bouillabaisse—a fish stew with fresh mussels, clams, prawns and the catch of the day.

One of the many delicious dishes at the Baldwin Saloon

If you’re looking for an after dinner drink, the Baldwin Saloon is the place to be. With over 10 specialty cocktails and a wide variety of wines and beers you will definitely find the drink for you!

If you’re staying at the Celilo Inn, a meal at the Baldwin Saloon is a must!

Take A Step Back Into History With The Fort Dalles Museum

The Dalles, Oregon is more than just a wine lover’s paradise; it also happens to be a great place for history buffs. Our guests can encounter a piece of history at every turn while they stay with us. In fact, Celilo Inn is a part of The Dalles history as well! For our guests that want to take a step back in time, the Fort Dalles Museum is the place to visit.

The Surgeon's Quarters at Fort Dalles

When visiting the Fort Dalles Museum, you will have the opportunity to see a variety of historical houses and artifacts. One such building is the Surgeon’s Quarters. The Surgeon’s Quarters is the only officer’s house remaining from the 1850’s. The Surgeon’s Quarters—which was originally part of Camp Drum (later named Fort Dalles)—played an integral part in the settling of the Willamette Valley since the Columbia River was the main guide for settlers to find their way to the Willamette Valley. As one can imagine, there wasn’t much civilization along the way so Fort Dalles was a bit of relief in an otherwise harsh, scary and unfamiliar environment. However, not everyone was thrilled to see the houses at Fort Dalles. Tensions were high between the officers of Fort Dalles and the surrounding natives. By visiting the Surgeon’s Quarters, not only will you be able to walk in one of Oregon’s oldest historical buildings, but you will also learn about how life on the frontier really was.

Part of the Anderson Homestead

Another structure at the Fort Dalles Museum is the Anderson House. The Anderson House is the original log homestead of Lewis Anderson, a Swedish immigrant. He built his home in 1895 near Fort Dalles. The homestead consists of three buildings—the house, the granary, and the barn. Left abandoned between 1950 and 1970, Wasco County and The Dalles purchased the homestead and restored it to its original glory a year later.

Mail Wagon

The Fort Dalles Museum also houses a large collection of antique vehicles ranging from covered wagons to vintage automobiles. With over 30 vehicles, this collection is a physical time line of the evolution of the individual transportation.

For more information on historical places in and around The Dalles be sure to speak to our friendly staff when staying at Celilo Inn.

To make a reservation you can call 541-769-0001 or go to www.celiloinn.com. For more information you can email info@celiloinn.com. For the latest updates on events, Like us on Facebook or Follow us on Twitter!

Celilo Inn — The Place To Be This October

Now that summer is officially over, (although many of us are in denial) people begin to think that travel, vacation and good times are on hold until next June. Celilo Inn disagrees. Although the days are shorter, and the weather is a little cooler that doesn’t mean that the fun has to end! Celilo Inn has a lot of spook-tacular things planned for our guests this October. Here are a few of them…

Patio Party

This past summer Celilo Inn hosted a patio party for our guests every Saturday from 6:00pm-8:00pm. These guest get-togethers included musical performances by the talented Bill Coones’ Jazz Trio as well as complimentary wine tastings from local wineries such as Waving Tree Winery, Quenett Winery and Maryhill Winery. Guests could also treat themselves to an assorted cheese platter with crackers and grapes.

Due to the projected forecast that calls for great weather, Celilo Inn has decided to extend our patio party through October 15th. Our October patio party will include musical performances by Jim MacMillian as well as Larry Adair’s Jazz Trio; and in honor of Fall guests will not only be given a complimentary glass of wine but a slice of delicious pumpkin pie as well!

 October Special

Most people are looking for deals during the summer, but why should the Fall have to miss out on all the fun? This October if you stay in one of our View Rooms, you can receive 50% off the second night. Wondering what you can do in The Dalles if you stay two nights? October means it’s harvesting season, which means it’s grape crushing time for the local wineries! So why not stay two nights and take your time visiting all the wonderful wineries the Columbia Gorge has to offer! If this sounds like something right up your alley call Celilo Inn at 541-769-0001 and use the code word “October” when booking your reservation!

Exclusive Halloween Week Special

Just because we’re all grown up doesn’t mean we don’t miss trick-or-treating! Recognizing the kid in all of us, Celilo Inn has set up a trick-or-treating rout of our own, but the reward is better than a bag full of candy!  If you stay at Celilo Inn the week prior to Halloween, you can partake in our winery trick-or-treat package. By visiting (or trick-or-treating) two local wineries and then bringing the receipt to Celilo Inn, you will receive 30% of your stay! We’d say that’s better than a bag full of candy! If you’d like to partake in this grown up trick-or-treat fun, use the code word “Scary” when booking your reservation!

Celilo’s Spook-tacular Weekend

Think Halloween is just for the kids? Think again! Stay with us on Halloween weekend and have the time of your life! By requesting our Halloween Weekend Package, you will receive the best goody bag of all. What does the Halloween Weekend Package include? Well for only $200 you will get to stay one night in our beautiful King View Room as well as receive 1 bottle of Lyle Style Bloody Mary Mix, 2 Halloween masks, candy, a $30 gift certificate to the Clock Tower Pub and Ale House (this pub is a restored Mortuary downtown!), and you will receive 2 tickets to the Haunted House at The Dalles Civic Center! This is definitely a Halloween weekend you won’t want to miss; just be sure to book your package at least 7 days prior to Halloween weekend to ensure that it is still available.

October Contest

Starting this month Celilo Inn will be starting up our monthly social media contests. Each month a new contest will be posted on either our Facebook page or our new Twitter page. Typically the prize will be a free night stay at Celilo Inn for the following month, however this month we will be doing something a little different! In the spirit of Halloween the prize will be our Halloween Weekend Package! By following us on Twitter you will automatically be entered into the contest which will run October 1st through October 23rd and we will announce the winner on October 24th. If you are this month’s winner you must use the Halloween Weekend Package either October 29th, 30th or 31st. If you do not than the package expires, so be sure to claim your prize!
