Business After Hours Comes To Celilo Inn

Celilo Inn hosts August's Business After Hours

This past Thursday, August 18th Celilo Inn was host to The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce event Business After Hours. Business After Hours is a monthly event put on by The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce. Every month the event is put on by a different local business and this month we at Celilo Inn were picked to throw the networking party!

Business After Hours is a networking opportunity for businesses in The Dalles, as well as locals that frequent them! Representatives from various businesses as well as Chamber members stopped by Celilo Inn between 5:00pm-7:00pm to meet each other as well as our guests. Although the majority of guests are Chamber members, every month Business After Hours is open to the public.

Complimentary wine tasting

Celilo Inn wanted to make this Business After Hours one to remember, so with the help of our beautiful views and great weather, we provided complimentary beer and wine to our guests. Waving Tree Winery and Cascade Cliffs Winery were also on hand to provide our guests with complimentary wine tasting, which was a big hit! Not wanting our guests or participants of Business After Hours to go hungry, we had a BBQ where we served succulent Santa Maria Tri-tips, fresh, crisp salad and delectable brownies. Needless to say, our guests were well fed.

Delicious gourmet bbq

Bill Coones' Jazz Trio

While our guests mingled with various business owners, the relaxing sounds of Bill Coones’ Jazz Trio played in the background. Bill Coones’ Jazz Trio has been a popular installment at Celilo Inn this summer and his upbeat and calming Jazz sound has set an inviting tone for our guests.

Wanting our guests to have the total experience, staff at Celilo Inn provided detailed and informative tours of the hotel. These tours included the history of the hotel which was originally built in the 1950’s as a roadside motel. As traffic patterns changed, the motel began to loose its main customer base. A few years back the motel was purchased by the current owners and the old motel went through a major over hall making it the luxury hotel that it is today!

All and all Business After Hours was a huge success, with over 70 people participating in the event. As we told our guests, Celilo Inn is a great place to stay for car clubs, as well as guests interested in fishing, wine tours, rafting, cycling, golfing or girls weekends!

Discovering the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center

One thing that makes The Dalles such a great place to visit is the rich history that surrounds the town. From the way the Columbia River Gorge was formed to the formation of the town itself, there is always something to learn, investigate and explore. Fortunately for our guests, Celilo Inn is located just 15 minutes from the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center.

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is a great place to visit for people of all ages, but especially families. Located, on the Columbia River, the views from the Discovery Center are incredible on their own, but once you start to explore what the Discovery Center has to offer, that is an even bigger treat!

Lewis & Clark

Lewis & Clark played a fundamental role in the history of The Dalles and the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center has a great interactive exhibit chronicling the famous expedition.

If you want to go even farther back in time, the Ice Age Exhibit is a fun place to check out. Many people wonder how

Columbian Mammoth

the Gorge came to be. This delves into the geologic history of the Gorge and includes a 13 foot, life-size Columbian Mammoth.

To find out how The Dalles was established, one only has to walk a few feet to the Wasco County Past and Present exhibit. Many of the surrounding towns, including The Dalles, were inhabited by Native American’s. These tribes’ paired with early settlers helped form what is known as Wasco County and The Dalles as we know it today.

Hawk from Raptor Experience

The Dalles is also home to a variety of birds. 11 am and 2pm daily, visitors of the Discovery Center can watch the amazing birds of prey show called The Raptor Experience. Some of the birds in the show include falcons, hawks, owls, and eagles. This show is a definite must see!

After touring the exhibits, the next stop is the Nature Walk & Native Plant Trail. This trail is handicap accessible and has a number of interpretive spots where people can learn about the native plants and the area. The trail winds around the Discovery Center Grounds, looping by a beautiful pond, wetland and overlooking the breathtakingColumbia River.

The next time you stay at Celilo Inn be sure to check it out!

Maryhill Museum, A Hidden Gem

Anyone that has ever visited The Dalles can attest to the surrounding beauty. Fortunately, the Celilo Inn is located in this stunning region of Oregon. In addition to the scenery, The Dalles is also home to an abundance of History. Housing many of these irreplaceable artifacts and stories is the Maryhill Museum. In fact, the Museum itself has its own unique history behind it.

Maryhill Museum

Samuel Hill

The original intention of the Maryhill Museum was not a museum at all, but rather a home. Samuel Hill was a highly successful business man throughout the early 1900’s. Playing a major role in the building of Oregon and Washington’s infrastructure, Hill was incredibly passionate about building a better Northwest. He also loved the magnificent Columbia River Gorge and wanted to make it accessible to everyone. In 1907, Hill began a perhaps overzealous project—the building of Maryhill Mansion. The mansion was named after his wife and daughter, although neither ever lived there. Unfortunately for Hill, construction on the mansion stopped in 1917 due to lack of irrigation at the time.

Not knowing what to do with his unfinished mansion, and getting on in age, Hill’s friend Loie Fuller encouraged him to

Loie Fuller

convert his mansion into a museum. Maryhill Museum would finally open in 1940, 9 years after Samuel Hill’s death.

Today, the Museum is one of the Columbia Gorge’s hidden treasures and it is only 30 minutes from the Celilo Inn! Every year Maryhill brings in new exhibits, but there are always a few crowd favorites that can be seen every visit. Although there are exhibits from all over the world, many of the items in the Museum are pieces of history from right here inThe Dalles.  There is more to Maryhill than just the museum however. Surrounding the Museum is a breathtaking, sprawling garden. The garden is home to not only exotic plants and intricate sculptures, but to peacocks as well that roam the grounds.

Many visitors to Maryhill Museum pack a picnic lunch, and stop at one of the many wineries along the way to purchase a bottle of wine. After exploring the museum, they sit in the garden, having lunch under the trees and watching the peacocks and the view.

Visiting the Maryhill Museum is an experience unlike any other and Celilo Inn is fortunate enough to be located near by.

Celilo Guests See Styx

Guest enjoying a pre-concert BBQ

Aside from their delicious wine, Maryhill Winery is also known for their great summer concerts that take places in their outdoor amphitheater. This past Saturday Yes and Styx performed at Maryhill!  As part of a deal between Celilo Inn and Maryhill Winery, we provide our guests with a complimentary shuttle service to and from the concert. This past Saturday was no exception!

Concerts can be a lot of fun, but going on an empty stomach is no fun at all! When you can’t hear the music over your stomach growling there’s a problem. Not wanting this to happen to our guests, at 3:00 pm Celilo Inn kicked off a complimentary, pre-concert barbeque. The barbeque took place on our patio that overlooks the beautiful Columbia River and The Dalles Dam. Since the Celilo Inn is located in The  Dalles, of course it was a beautiful, warm afternoon.

BBQ at Celilo Inn

Like any good barbeque Celilo Inn served our guests mouthwatering hamburgers and cheeseburgers. They could top their burgers off with an assortment of condiments. Since no barbeque would be complete without chips, Celilo Inn provided delicious Kettle Chips to compliment the tasty burgers. To add a little sweet to the savory, our guests could also fill up on juicy grapes!

Not wanting our guests to be thirsty, red and white wine was available for our guests as well as ice cold lemon water. Celilo Inn also invited Quenett Winery to provide our guests with a complimentary wine tasting. Quenett provided two red wines and one white. On this gorgeous summer day, the Pinot Gris seemed to be our guests wine of choice, and for good reason! It is an extremely delicious wine, especially for a hot day!

Quenett Wine Tasting

Bill Coones' Jazz Trio

To top it all off, Bill Coones’ Jazz Trio performed live on our patio. The upbeat, relaxing jazz music helped set a nice tone to the barbeque.

At 5:00 pm it was time for our guests to head on their way. All in all, our guests had a great time gearing up for the concert on our patio. Full and happy, our guests boarded the complimentary shuttle to Maryhill to enjoy Yes and Styx live! With the concert starting at7:00 pm, guests were given ample time to get their seats and explore Maryhill Winery if they so chose.

After the concert, guests boarded the shuttle and came back to Celilo Inn. Since shuttles get to leave first, our guests did not have to wait to get out of the parking lot, or deal with traffic. When they returned to Celilo, although tired, many voiced that they had a blast and couldn’t wait to come back for another concert at Maryhill and a stay at the Celilo Inn.

To find out more about concerts at Maryhill you can visit www.maryhillwinery.com. For a fun, relaxing, comfortable and convenient place to stay you can email us at info@celiloinn.com or call us at 541-769-0001.
