Restaurant With A View

Not only does The Dalles offer breathtaking views, it also offers delicious, gourmet food. Celilo Inn is fortunate enough to be located so close to so many incredible restaurants. Our guests need not venture more than 5 minutes from the hotel before coming across a locally popular restaurant! One of our favorite restaurants is the Windseeker, which combines fresh, yummy food and exquisite views.

The Windseeker is located right next to the Columbia River, providing its patrons with spectacular views while they dine. Depending on the season, guests to the restaurant can sit inside or they can take in the surroundings more fully by sitting on the inviting patio.  In addition to the natural beauty of the Gorge, the Windseeker has planted beautiful gardens that patrons can stroll through after their delicious meal.

However, the Windseeker offers more than just great views, their food is exceptional as well.  Basing their dishes on the local cuisine, they specialize in mouth-watering seafood dishes, but if seafood isn’t your favorite flavor there is plenty more to choose from. Between crisp salads, juicy burgers, and flavorful pastas you’re bound to find something you love. Stop by on Sunday’s for their brunch where they serve gourmet omelets and Belgian waffles.

Take A Step Back Into History With The Fort Dalles Museum

The Dalles, Oregon is more than just a wine lover’s paradise; it also happens to be a great place for history buffs. Our guests can encounter a piece of history at every turn while they stay with us. In fact, Celilo Inn is a part of The Dalles history as well! For our guests that want to take a step back in time, the Fort Dalles Museum is the place to visit.

The Surgeon's Quarters at Fort Dalles

When visiting the Fort Dalles Museum, you will have the opportunity to see a variety of historical houses and artifacts. One such building is the Surgeon’s Quarters. The Surgeon’s Quarters is the only officer’s house remaining from the 1850’s. The Surgeon’s Quarters—which was originally part of Camp Drum (later named Fort Dalles)—played an integral part in the settling of the Willamette Valley since the Columbia River was the main guide for settlers to find their way to the Willamette Valley. As one can imagine, there wasn’t much civilization along the way so Fort Dalles was a bit of relief in an otherwise harsh, scary and unfamiliar environment. However, not everyone was thrilled to see the houses at Fort Dalles. Tensions were high between the officers of Fort Dalles and the surrounding natives. By visiting the Surgeon’s Quarters, not only will you be able to walk in one of Oregon’s oldest historical buildings, but you will also learn about how life on the frontier really was.

Part of the Anderson Homestead

Another structure at the Fort Dalles Museum is the Anderson House. The Anderson House is the original log homestead of Lewis Anderson, a Swedish immigrant. He built his home in 1895 near Fort Dalles. The homestead consists of three buildings—the house, the granary, and the barn. Left abandoned between 1950 and 1970, Wasco County and The Dalles purchased the homestead and restored it to its original glory a year later.

Mail Wagon

The Fort Dalles Museum also houses a large collection of antique vehicles ranging from covered wagons to vintage automobiles. With over 30 vehicles, this collection is a physical time line of the evolution of the individual transportation.

For more information on historical places in and around The Dalles be sure to speak to our friendly staff when staying at Celilo Inn.

Maryhill Museum, A Hidden Gem

Anyone that has ever visited The Dalles can attest to the surrounding beauty. Fortunately, the Celilo Inn is located in this stunning region of Oregon. In addition to the scenery, The Dalles is also home to an abundance of History. Housing many of these irreplaceable artifacts and stories is the Maryhill Museum. In fact, the Museum itself has its own unique history behind it.

Maryhill Museum

Samuel Hill

The original intention of the Maryhill Museum was not a museum at all, but rather a home. Samuel Hill was a highly successful business man throughout the early 1900’s. Playing a major role in the building of Oregon and Washington’s infrastructure, Hill was incredibly passionate about building a better Northwest. He also loved the magnificent Columbia River Gorge and wanted to make it accessible to everyone. In 1907, Hill began a perhaps overzealous project—the building of Maryhill Mansion. The mansion was named after his wife and daughter, although neither ever lived there. Unfortunately for Hill, construction on the mansion stopped in 1917 due to lack of irrigation at the time.

Not knowing what to do with his unfinished mansion, and getting on in age, Hill’s friend Loie Fuller encouraged him to

Loie Fuller

convert his mansion into a museum. Maryhill Museum would finally open in 1940, 9 years after Samuel Hill’s death.

Today, the Museum is one of the Columbia Gorge’s hidden treasures and it is only 30 minutes from the Celilo Inn! Every year Maryhill brings in new exhibits, but there are always a few crowd favorites that can be seen every visit. Although there are exhibits from all over the world, many of the items in the Museum are pieces of history from right here inThe Dalles.  There is more to Maryhill than just the museum however. Surrounding the Museum is a breathtaking, sprawling garden. The garden is home to not only exotic plants and intricate sculptures, but to peacocks as well that roam the grounds.

Many visitors to Maryhill Museum pack a picnic lunch, and stop at one of the many wineries along the way to purchase a bottle of wine. After exploring the museum, they sit in the garden, having lunch under the trees and watching the peacocks and the view.

Visiting the Maryhill Museum is an experience unlike any other and Celilo Inn is fortunate enough to be located near by.
